Auf der A9 von Norden kommend bei St. Pankraz abfahren bzw. von Süden kommend in Gleinkerau. Von beiden Abfahrten in Richtung Hinterstoder fahren. Durch Hinterstoder durch fahren immer in Richtung Talschluss. Von der katholischen Kirche in Hinterstoder fährt man noch etwa 3,8 km, ehe links ein kleiner Parkplatz mit einer Kapelle auftaucht. Direkt danach biegt man links in das Weißenbachtal. Man fährt ca. 2km in das Tal hinein, auf der linken Seite kommt ein schönes Holzhaus und ca. 150m danach kann man direkt vor der Brücke über den Weißenbach, wo rechts eine Schotterstraße den Berg hinauf geht, parken. Dieser Parkplatz ist ideal, weil doch einige Autos stehen bleiben können, ohne jemanden zu stören. (Parkplatzkoordinaten: 47.659953, 14.130017)

On the A9 coming from the north exit at St. Pankraz or coming from the south at Gleinkerau. From both exits drive in the direction of Hinterstoder. Drive through Hinterstoder always in the direction of the end of the valley. From the catholic church in Hinterstoder you drive about 3.8 km before a small parking lot with a chapel appears on the left. Directly after that you turn left into the Weißenbachtal. You drive about 2km into the valley, on the left side there is a nice wooden house and about 150m after that you can park directly in front of the bridge over the Weißenbach, where a gravel road goes up the mountain on the right. This parking lot is ideal, because some cars can stay without disturbing anyone. (Parking coordinates: 47.659953, 14.130017)

Man geht noch 400m die asphaltierte Straße Taleinwärts bis rechts ein Forstweg in Richtung Weißenbach kommt. Dort biegt man ab und geht nach ca. 300m über den Weißenbach. Der Forststraße folgen und sobald es geht in Richtung Weißenbach runter gehen, sodass man in das Bachbett gelangt (nicht bis zum Ende gehen wo man auf den oberen Weißenbach trifft!) Man geht im Bachbett für ca. 500m, dann kommt man an einem kaum mehr sichtbaren Fundament einer Wildwasserverbauung (in Canyon Wiki beschrieben) vorbei bevor or. li ein kleiner Bach mit einer Wasserfallkaskade einmündet. Vom Parkplatz geht man bis hierher ca. 15-20 min. Wenn man das Wasser noch checken will, so bleibt man im Bachbett für ca. 200m und kommt zum Schlusswasserfall. Ansonsten geht man bei der Einmündung der Wasserfallkaskade or. li. den Hang hoch. Bis jetzt war die Wegfindung easy;-) , ab jetzt wird’s spannend. Es empfiehlt sich auf alle Fälle eine Navigationsapp, wo man eine Open Street Map Karte hat, da der Pfad – der teilweise nicht mehr ersichtlich ist – dort eingezeichnet ist und das hilft im teilweisen weglosen Gelände ungemein, um wieder zumindest einen Wildwechsel zu finden, der einem den Weg weist. Wichtig ist, dass man sich immer im Hinterkopf behält, ca. 30 – 40 Hm über dem Weißenbach zu bleiben. Den anfangs noch sichtbaren Weg direkt bei der Wasserfallkaskade, sollte man wenn man ca. 40Hm über dem Weißenbach ist verlassen und den kaum sichtbaren Wildtritten und erahnbaren Jägersteig weiter folgen, immer oberhalb des Weißenbaches. Man kommt dann relativ bald auf ein kleines Geröllfeld im Wald, dort ist der Jägersteig klar ersichtlich. D.h. sollte man sich dort noch nicht auf den Jägersteig befinden, heißt es entlang des Geröllfelds nach oben oder unten suchen. Das Gelände ist stark abschüssig und man sollte hier den Jägersteig finden, da sonst das weitere Passieren schwierig wird. Wenn man den Jägersteig hat, diesem weiter entlang des Weißenbaches folgen, ehe man auf ca. 960 Hm (ca. 30-45 min Gehzeit vom Parkplatz weg) auf eine neue Wildbachverbauung des Weißenbachs trifft (Einstieg unterer Teil). Um zum oberen Teil zu gelangen geht man bis zum Ende des Schotterfeldes, wo die Engklamm wieder beginnt und geht or. li. den klar ersichtlichen Weg hoch. Nach einigen Höhenmetern passiert man einen Bach und kommt dann zu einem zweiten. Hier entfernt man sich ein bisschen von der Engklamm des Weißenbaches. Man geht bis zu dem kleinen Wasserfall des Baches und klettert dann relativ abenteuerlich über ein Geröllfeld ca. 20 Hm hinauf bevor man auf den Kamm kommt. Nun kann man wieder die Engklamm des Weißenbachs erahnen. Nun wird es spannend, weil sich der Weg verliert. D.h. man geht weglos taleinwärts im Wald und muss einige Höhenmeter wachen. Irgendwann trifft man dann wieder auf einen trockenen Bach und einen weiteren mit einer tiefen Rinne. Das Gelände ist hier schon offener und spät. hier sollte man wieder den Jägersteig gefunden haben. Man kommt dann zu einem Platz mit Salzstein für das Wild und ist dann in ca. 5 min beim Einstieg auf ca 1260Hm

Access: (2h) Follow the asphalt road down the valley for another 400m until you reach a forest road on the right in the direction of Weißenbach. There you turn and after about 300m you cross the Weißenbach. Follow the forest road and as soon as possible go down towards Weißenbach, so that you reach the streambed (do not go to the exit where you meet the upper Weißenbach). You walk in the streambed for about 500m, then you pass a hardly visible foundation of a whitewater dam (described in Canyon Wiki) before or. left a small stream with a waterfall cascade flows in. From the parking lot you walk about 15-20 min. If you want to check the water, you stay in the streambed for about 200m and reach the final waterfall. Otherwise, go up the slope at the confluence of the waterfall cascade or. left. Until now the way finding was easy ;-) but from now on it gets exciting. It is recommended in any case a navigation app, where you have an Open Street Map map, because the path - which is partly no longer apparent - is drawn there and that helps in the partly pathless terrain immensely to find again at least a game trail that shows you the way. It is important to always keep in mind to stay about 30 - 40 Hm above the Weißenbach. The initially still visible path directly at the waterfall cascade, you should leave when you are about 40Hm above the Weissenbach and follow the barely visible game kicks and guessable hunters path further, always above the Weissenbach. You will soon come to a small boulder field in the forest, where the hunters path is clearly visible. I.e. if you are not yet on the hunters path, you have to search along the boulder field up or down. The terrain is very steep and you should find the hunters path here, otherwise it will be difficult to pass. Once you have the hunters path, follow it further along the Weissenbach stream, before you meet a new torrent dam of the Weissenbach stream at approx. 960 m altitude (approx. 30-45 min walking time away from the parking lot) (entry lower part). To get to the upper part, walk to the exit of the gravel field where the gorge begins again and walk or. left up the clearly visible path. After a few meters of altitude you pass a stream and then come to a second one. Here you move a bit away from the gorge of the Weißenbach. You go up to the small waterfall of the stream and then climb relatively adventurously over a boulder field about 20 Hm up before you come to the ridge. Now you can again guess the gorge of the Weißenbach. Now it becomes exciting, because the path gets lost. I.e. one goes pathlessly into the valley in the forest and must watch some meters of altitude. At some point you meet again a dry stream and another one with a deep chute. The terrain is here already more open and late. here one should have found again the hunters path. One then comes to a place with salt stone for the game and is then in about 5 min at the entry at about 1260Hm

Tourenbeschreibung oberer Teil: ca 2h Der Weißenbach war beim Zeitpunkt unserer Begehung (12.06.2020) in sensationellem Zustand. Der Canyon wurde durch die Bergrettung professionell eingebohrt, d.h. es gibt überall zumindest einen Klebehaken und jede Abseilstelle ist nummeriert mit teilw. Hinweisen auf Fluchtwege. Gleich beim ersten Stand findet man eine generelle Beschreibung der Tour, beschrieben von der Bergrettung (auf einem Hinweisschild). Der obere Teil des. Ht. Weißenbachs ist sensationell schön. Traumhafte Bergkulisse, geologisch ist die Schlucht sicher eine der schönsten Österreichs. Aufgrund des abenteuerlichen Zustiegs und teilweise Abseilern, die zwingend im Wasser mit hohem Wasserdruck sind, ist es aber sicher ein Canyon für fortgeschrittene Canyonauten. Bis zum SOS 17- Abseiler ist der Canyon relativ offen, jedoch in einer beeindruckenden Bergkulisse. Ab dem SOS 16-Abseiler startet eine höchstbeeindruckende Engklamm, die zuerst mit einem 12m-Abseiler beginnt, ehe man beim SOS 15-Abseiler ca.7m ohne Sichtkontakt bis zum Kettenstand des höchsten und spektakulärsten Abseilers hinseilt. Der 35m-Abseiler ist extrem beeindruckend, weil man das Gefühl hat unten voll in das mit großem Druck runter-schießende Wasser zu kommen und die Ankunft von oben nicht einsichtig ist. Mit ein bisschen Geschick kommt man jedoch unter den Wasserfall und so ist der Wasserdruck unten kein Problem. Es folgt noch eine kleine 5m-Stufe und man hat das Gefühl von einer Höhle wieder in ein großes Tal zu kommen. Diese Stelle ist sensationell, weil links und rechts ca. 150m Wände senkrecht nach oben gehen und sich in der Mitte das relativ breite Bachbett des Weißenbachs befindet. Es folgt eine kleine Gehstrecke bis sich der Canyon bei der SOS 12 Abseilstelle wieder leicht enger wird. Aufzupassen ist beim SOS 11 Abseiler, weil das Wasser eine relativ flache Rinne runterschießt und man durch das Weißwasser den Boden der Rinne nicht sieht. Im letzten Drittel befindet sich ein großes Loch und durch die Rinne hat man einen starken Wasserdruck. Es empfiehlt sich diese Stelle or. li. mit dem Seil mit etwas Geschick zu umgehen. Nach einer kurzen Wegstrecke kommt man zur nächsten Engklamm und das Ambiente des Canyons ändert sich komplett. Oben hat der Canyon einen hochalpinen, vertikalen Charakter. Ab dem SOS10-Abseiler, wo auch ein weiterer Bach von or.li. mit einem kleinen Wasserfall zufließt, wird der Canyon aquatischer und bekommt eher den Charakter eines „Waldgrabens“, jedoch im positiven Sinne. Tief eingeschnitten dunkel, dunkler ausgewaschener Kalk, glasklares Wasser und weit über einem drüber sattes Grün – ein richtiger Farbenflash. Beim SOS 8-Abseiler glaubt man nur ca. 7m in den Gumpen darunter abseilen zu müssen, doch der Abseiler geht weiter durch beeindruckende, ausgeschliffene Rinnen. Der SOS7 Abseiler und eine kurze Schwimmstrecke markiert das Ende des oberen Teils. Tourenbeschreibung unterer Teil: ca. 1h Im Vergleich zum oberen Teil des Canyons ist der untere Teil leider eher „Waldgraben-Stile“. Zwar schön, aber nach dem Flash des oberen Teils, kann dieser Teil das Niveau nicht ganz halten. Der untere Teil ist eher offen und befindet sich im Wald. Beginnen tut der untere Teil direkt an der Wildbachverbauung, die man re. abklettert. Relativ eng aufeinanderfolgend ist der 20m-Abseiler von der Wildbachverbauung und ein 17m-Abseiler, ehe man nach einer kurzen Gehstrecke bei einem 20m-Abseiler mit einem kleinem „Kanonenrohr“ ankommt. Nach dem Kanonenrohr folgt eine Geh- und Abkletterpassage gefolgt von einem flacheren Abseiler (SOS 3) bis man vor einer Stelle steht, wo man nicht genau weiß wie man hier runterkommt. Man könnte diese Stelle or. li umgehen (so war es wahrscheinlich auch von der Bergrettung gedacht), jedoch haben wir bei einem Baum or. li eine Schlinge angebracht und haben erst danach gesehen, dass or. re. nach einer Abkletterstelle ein Bohrhaken angebracht ist. Beim SOS2-Abseiler muss man auf den Seilabzug achten, da die Haken hinter einem Felswulst angebracht wurden und dann kommt man zum SOS 1-Abseiler. Hier hat man 2 Möglichkeiten: Entweder man geht direkt im Wasser direkt vom SOS 1 Abseiler weg, wenn einem jedoch der Wasserdruck zu hoch ist, kann man or. li. mit einem Seilgeländer zur einer „trockenen“ Abseilstelle gelangen. Hier muss man aber extrem aufpassen, da diese Stelle wahnsinnig steinschlaggefährdet ist und richtig große Brocken durch das Seil im Abseiler gelöst werden können. Unten angekommen geht man ca. 200m das Bachbett entlang, bevor man wieder bei der Wasserfallkaskade ankommt, wo der Zustieg begonnen hat.

Tour description upper part: ca 2h The Weißenbach was at the time of our ascent (12.06.2020) in sensational condition. The canyon was professionally drilled by the mountain rescue, i.e. there is at least one glued anchor everywhere and each rappel point is numbered with partial indications of escape routes. Immediately at the first stand you will find a general description of the tour, described by the mountain rescue (on a sign). The upper part of the. Ht. Weißenbach is sensationally beautiful. Fantastic mountain scenery, geologically the canyon is certainly one of the most beautiful in Austria. Due to the adventurous access and partial rappelers, which are mandatory in the water with high water pressure, but it is certainly a canyon for advanced canyoneers. Until the SOS 17- rappel the canyon is relatively open, but in an impressive mountain scenery. From the SOS 16-rappel starts a highly impressive gorge, which first starts with a 12m-rappel, before at the SOS 15-rappel you rappel about 7m without visual contact to the chain anchor of the highest and most spectacular rappel. The 35m rappel is extremely impressive, because you have the feeling that you are at the bottom of the water shooting down with great pressure and the arrival from above is not visible. With a little skill, however, you can get under the waterfall and so the water pressure at the bottom is no problem. There follows another small 5m step and one has the feeling of coming from a cave back into a large valley. This place is sensational, because left and right about 150m walls go vertically upwards and in the middle is the relatively wide streambed of the Weißenbach. A small walking passages follows until the canyon narrows slightly again at the SOS 12 rappel point. Care must be taken at the SOS 11 rappel because the water shoots down a relatively shallow chute and you cannot see the bottom of the chute through the white water. In the last third there is a big hole and through the chute you have a strong water pressure. It is recommended to bypass this place or. left with the rope with some skill. After a short distance you come to the next gorge and the ambience of the canyon changes completely. At the top, the canyon has a high alpine, vertical character. From the SOS10 rappel, where also another stream flows in from or.left with a small waterfall, the canyon becomes more aquatic and gets more the character of a "forest canyon", but in a positive sense. Deeply cut dark, dark washed out limestone, crystal clear water and far above one over it lush green - a real color flash. At the SOS 8 rappel, you think you only have to rappel about 7m into the pool below, but the rappel continues through impressive, polished chutes. The SOS7 rappel and a short swim marks the exit of the upper section. Tour description lower part: approx. 1h Compared to the upper part of the canyon, the lower part is unfortunately more "forest canyon style". While beautiful, after the flash of the upper part, this part can't quite maintain the level. The lower part is more open and is in the forest. Begin does the lower part right at the torrent obstruction, which you climb down the right. Relatively close to each other is the 20m rappel from the torrent and a 17m rappel, before you arrive after a short walking passages at a 20m rappel with a small "cannon tube". After the cannon tube follows a walking and downclimb followed by a flatter rappel (SOS 3) until you are faced with a place where you do not know exactly how to get down here. One could bypass this place or. left (so it was probably also thought by the mountain rescue), however, we have attached a sling at a tree or. left and have seen only afterwards that or. right after a downclimb is attached a bolthook. At the SOS2 rappel you have to pay attention to the rope retrival, because the anchors were placed behind a rock bulge and then you come to the SOS 1 rappel. Here you have 2 options: Either you go directly in the water directly away from the SOS 1 rappel, but if the water pressure is too high for you, you can reach or. left with a rope traverse to a "dry" rappel point. Here you have to be extremely careful, because this place is insanely rockfall and really big chunks can be loosened by the ropes in the rappel. Once at the bottom, you walk along the streambed for about 200m before arriving back at the waterfall cascade, where the access began.

Wie beim Zustieg folgt man dem Bachbett Talauswärts, geht auf die Forststraße und danach auf die asphaltierte Straße bis zum Parkplatz

As with the access, follow the streambed out of the valley, take the forest road and then the asphalt road to the parking lot.
