Von der B 2 zwischen Garmisch-Partenkirchen und Mittenwald auf die B 11 (Deutsche Alpenstraße) in Richtung Walchensee, Kochel abbiegen. Man kommt sogleich in die Ortschaft Krün und biegt etwa in der Ortsmitte (nach der Kirche, rechts Bäckerei) in westlicher Richtung ab auf die Krottenkopfstraße. Auf dieser 850m, vorbei an gebührenpflichtigen Ausflugsparkplätzen, dann (Stadel rechts) links ab auf den Oterwanger Weg und nach weiteren 130m auf den (schattigen) Parkplatz des Cafes Maximilianshof (fragen, ob Auto abgestellt werden kann unter Hinweis auf spätere Einkehr).

From the B 2 between Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Mittenwald, turn onto the B 11 (German Alpine Road) in the direction of Walchensee, Kochel. You will immediately come to the village of Krün and turn west onto Krottenkopfstraße approximately in the center of the village (after the church, bakery on the right). Follow this road for 850m, past the paid parking lots for excursions, then (barn on the right) turn left onto Oterwanger Weg and after another 130m onto the (shady) parking lot of the Maximilianshof café (ask if you can park your car, indicating that you can stop for refreshments later).

Zurück zur Krottenkopfstraße und 400m in Richtung WNW. An der Gabelung rechts und dann immer der Wegweisung zur Finz-Alm folgen.Nach Überquerung des Altgrabens passiert man eine kleine Diensthütte (li.) und sieht nach Erreichen der nächsten Höhe das hier offene Kies-Bachbett des Finzbachs und re. in einiger Entfernung die Finz-Alm. Nun hinunter zum Bach, direkt am Einstieg.

Back to Krottenkopfstraße and 400m in a WNW direction. At the fork, turn right and then follow the signs to the Finz-Alm; after crossing the old ditch, you will pass a small service hut (left) and, after reaching the next height, you will see the open gravel streambed of the Finzbach and the Finz-Alm some distance to the right. Now descend to the stream, directly at the entry point.

Zunächst 3 problemlose Abseiler, dann kommt man zur Schlüsselstelle. Von links schießt der Wasserfall des Altgrabens herab, rechts rauscht das gesammelte Wasser beider Bäche in eine enge Rinne. Ein Absteigen in dieser Rinne von dem an der rechten Wand angebrachten Haken ist nur bei wenig Wasserdurchsatz anzuraten. Ansonsten muss man höhengleich über einen glitschigen Absatz in die linke Wand zu einem dort fixierten Haken (Drahtseil nach oben) queren und von hier am Rande des Strahls abseilen (20m). Den glitschigen Absatz kann man mit Draht- oder Wurzelbürste griffiger machen. Notfalls hilft auch das Aufstreuen von Sand aus dem Bach. Das Sicherungsseil für den ersten Querenden sollte man möglichst links an der Wand über dem Gumpen anbringen, damit ein Ausrutschen nicht mit einem Fall in die Rinne und den Strahl verbunden ist. 2018 konnte man das Sicherungsseil an Baumstämmen oberhalb des Gumpens befestigen. 2019 haben wir für die Querung mehrere Haken an der li. Wand gesetzt und ein Fixseil eingezogen. Das Fixseil muß im Zweifel jedes Jahr auf's Neue eingezogen werden. Bei überdurchnittlichem Wasserdurchsatz empfiehlt sich der Einstieg über den Altgraben. In diesem Fall bis zum besagten Stand in der Wand ca. 30m, bis unten 50m Abseillänge. Auf eine weitere uU heikle Stelle trifft man beim nächsten Abseiler ("Hoher Fall"). Hier sieht man unten einen Kreiselgumpen, der schon bei durchschnittlichem Wasserdurchsatz Probleme bereiten kann. Ein Fixseil erleichtert hier den Ausstieg - auch für die am Wochenende zahlreichen Badegäste -, aber machmal hängt es eben nicht in den Gumpen. Dann entweder am rechten Rand des Wasserfalls einen Haken setzen oder vom vorhandenen Haken (li. an der Wand) quer durch den Fall zur orograf. re. Seite seilen, um den Strudel unten zu umgehen. Auch in diesem Fall sollte man sicherhetshalber schon von oben (von der rechten Seite des Falls aus) einen Treibanker installieren. Nach dem Hohen Fall Wanderung im Bachbett bis zum Ausstieg an der Wasserableitung (erst kurz vor dem Wehr re. hinaus !).

First 3 easy rappels, then you come to the crux. The waterfall of the Altgraben shoots down from the left, while the collected water from both streams rushes into a narrow chute on the right. Descending this chute from the anchor on the right-hand wall is only advisable when the water flow is low. Otherwise, you have to traverse at the same height over a slippery ledge into the left wall to an anchor fixed there (wire rope upwards) and rappel from here at the edge of the stream (20m). You can make the slippery ledge easier to grip with a wire or root brush. If necessary, scattering sand from the stream can also help. The safety rope for the first traverse should be attached to the left of the wall above the pool if possible, so that slipping is not associated with a fall into the chute and the stream. In 2018, the safety rope could be attached to tree trunks above the pool. In 2019, we placed several anchors on the left wall for the traverse and installed a fixed rope. If in doubt, the fixed ropes have to be pulled in again every year. If the water flow is above average, entry via the old trench is recommended. In this case, the abseil length is approx. 30m to the said stand in the wall and 50m to the bottom. Another possibly tricky spot can be found at the next rappel ("Hoher Fall"). Here you can see a gyro pump at the bottom, which can cause problems even with an average water flow. A fixed rope makes the exit easier here - also for the numerous bathers at the weekend - but sometimes it doesn't hang in the pool. Then either place an anchor on the right edge of the waterfall or rope from the existing anchor (left on the wall) across the fall to the orographic right side to bypass the whirlpool below. In this case you should also install a floating anchor from the top (from the right side of the fall) to be on the safe side. After the high fall, hike in the streambed to the exit at the water diversion (only exit right just before the dam!).

Fußweg auf der orograf. re. Seite den jetzt trockenen Bach abwärts gehen. Beim Heraustreten aus dem Wald (re. Scheune) den Feldweg in östlicher Richtung zurück zu Krottenkopfstraße und dann re. zum Cafe.

Follow the footpath on the orographic right down the now dry stream. As you emerge from the forest (barn on the right), take the field path in an easterly direction back to Krottenkopfstraße and then right to the café.
