Von Agios Nikolaos auf der sog. New Road (Nr. 90/E 75) Richtung Sitia, noch vorbei an Pachia Ammos (bis hierher 19 km). Rechts biegt die Straße nach Ierapetra (südwärts) ab. Wir fahren geradeaus (Osten) weiter in Richtung Sitia ud erreichen nach 5 km Kavousi. Wir durchfahren die Ortschaft und biegen bei den letzten Häusern und noch vor der Brücke rechts ab (Hinweisschild 'Archeological Site'). Wir fahren die betonierte Piste aufwärts, ignorieren die Abzweigung zur 'Archeological Site' (2,2 km ab Abzweigung von der E 75) und kommen an einem der ältesten Olivenbäume Kretas vorbei. Dann geht es etwas bergab und wir kreuzen ein Bachbett (4,3 km): rechts (südlich) endet der Mesonas, links beginnt der Havgas. Hier lassen wir ein Auto stehen. Mit dem anderen geht es weiter bergauf. Noch vor Erreichen des Dorfes Melisses nehmen wir nach einem Tor die Piste nach rechts (6,4 km). Wir queren ein Bachbett und folgen der Piste immer weiter aufwärts, bis wir nach einigen Serpentinen einen Sattel erreichen (10,3 km; 740 m ü.NN). In etwa horizontal geht es von hier nach Süden (re. unten ein Haus, dahinter der Schluchteingang). Im Talschluss queren wir 'unseren' Bach und stellen das Auto etwa 100 m danach ab, wo eine Steintreppe (über einer Wasserleitung) rechts hinunter führt. Für den bei Bromirakis beschriebenen Zustieg muss man noch weiter (bis km 12,5) fahren.\nFür die Auffahrt empfiehlt sich ein Allradfahrzeug, jedenfalls aber eines mit mehr Bodenfreiheit als bei den gebräuchlichen PKW's. Auf der orograf. linken Bachseite führt aber auch ein Pfad hinauf zum Einstieg (wo er den Bach kreuzt).\nWenn man den Havgas weitergehen will, das erste Fahrzeug in Kavousi abstellen (genauer bei der Havgas-Beschreibung).

From Agios Nikolaos on the so-called New Road (No. 90/E 75) towards Sitia, still passing Pachia Ammos (up to here 19 km). The road to Ierapetra (southwards) turns off to the right. We continue straight (east) towards Sitia and after 5 km we reach Kavousi. We drive through the village and turn right at the last houses and before the bridge (sign 'Archeological Site'). We drive up the concrete road, ignoring the turnoff to the 'Archeological Site' (2.2 km from the turnoff from the E75) and pass one of the oldest olive trees in Crete. Then we go downhill a bit and cross a streambed (4.3 km): on the right (south) ends the Mesonas, on the left begins the Havgas. Here we leave one car. With the other one we continue uphill. Before reaching the village of Melisses, we take the dirt road to the right after a gate (6.4 km). We cross a streambed and follow the dirt road uphill until we reach a saddle after a few switchbacks (10.3 km; 740 m a.s.l.). From here, the trail goes more or less horizontally to the south (on the right, below, a house, behind it the entrance to the gorge). At the head of the valley we cross 'our' stream and park the car about 100 m after it, where a stone staircase (above a water pipe) leads down to the right. For the access described by Bromirakis you have to go further (up to km 12,5).\nFor the ascent we recommend a four-wheel drive vehicle, but in any case one with more ground clearance than the usual passenger cars. On the orographic left side of the stream, however, there is also a path leading up to the entry (where it crosses the stream).\nIf you want to continue the Havgas, park the first vehicle in Kavousi (more detailed at the Havgas description).
