From one of the parking lots at the beginning of the Hinterautal valley on the eastern edge of Scharnitz, cycle for about 1 hour almost to the end of the valley. About 500m before reaching the Kastenalm, the wide gravel bed of the Birkkarbach opens up on the left. The ascent begins at the eastern edge of the gravel bed. Alternatively, you can take the Karwendel cab (Taxi Mair) to the junction with the footpath to the Karwendelhaus if you don't have a bike or don't want to pedal.

Follow the eastern edge of the wide gravel bed until the path on the right leads out of the gravel bed. Follow this until it crosses the streambed of the Birkkarbach stream. The descent begins a few meters below.

see photos and video Note: Contrary to what is stated in the "Tyrolean Canyoning Guide" by Amor/Rimel, we needed 2x30m of rope for the penultimate rappel (at Riml 16m), which was barely enough. There is no indication of an intermediate position either on the topographic view in the book or in real life. It is possible that I am wrong in this respect. We drilled the last rappel down into the gravel bed of the stream.

After the last rappel into the gravel bed, turn left steeply up to the approach path and follow it down to the road. Alternatively, continue down the mostly open gravel bed of the stream. After the gorge opens up, keep left to the road.

Was combined with Moserkarbach. The Birkkarbach has somewhat more interesting rappels than the Moserkarbach. Approach very steep in the upper part. Cab may only drive until 18:00 because of nature conservation, cell phone reception (A1 network) only again in the lower part of the descent (when forest begins). Many old hooks of the brand self-made with shackles, 4 of them were newly drilled and replaced on stainless steel or supplemented.
