Von Funchal auf der ER-103 über Monte zum Col de Poiso und jenseits hinab. Ungefähr 2,4 km nach dem Col geht links in spitzem Wikel eine Forstpiste ab;rechts auf der Straßenverbreiterung (32.723614,-16.889656) kann das obere Auto abgestellte werden. Das untere Auto stellt man beim Forsthaus (mit Fischzucht) am Rand des Weilers Ribeiro Frio ab (32.733585,-16.887082). Diesen erreicht man, wenn man vom oberen Parkplatz auf der ER-103 ca. 2 km weiter bergab in Richtung Faial fährt.
From Funchal on the ER-103 over Monte to the Col de Poiso and beyond down. About 2.4 km after the col, a forestry track turns off to the left in a sharp bend; the upper car can be parked on the right on the road widening (32.723614,-16.889656). The lower car can be left at the forester's house (with fish farm) on the edge of the hamlet of Ribeiro Frio (32.733585,-16.887082). This can be reached by driving downhill from the upper parking lot on the ER-103 for about 2 km in the direction of Faial.

Die Schlucht wird im unteren Bereich (nach dem 50er) kommerziell begangen und ist sehr gut abgesichert. Wir hatten klares, aber recht kaltes, Wasser. Der 50er Abseiler hatte schon etwas Druck beim Abseilen im Wasserstrahl.
The canyon is commercially accessible in the lower section (after the 50) and is very well secured. The water was clear, but quite cold. The 50 rappel already had some pressure when rappelling in the water jet.

Nach starken Regenfällen in der Nacht mit sportlichem Flow, aber gut machbar. Keine drehenden Pools. Wasserstand nicht direkt am Ausstieg am Wehr prüfen! Direkt oberhalb kommt ein Zufluss hinzu (ca. 30%). Wasserstand wie in der Beschreibung an der Brücke überprüfen. Erster hoher Wasserfall beim Zustieg sehr gut von der Straße einsehbar.
After heavy rainfall at night with a sporty flow, but easily doable. No turning pools. Do not check the water level directly at the exit at the dam! There is an inflow directly above (approx. 30%). Check the water level at the bridge as described. The first high waterfall at the access can be seen very well from the road.

There is very little water flowing. The gorge is partly dry. You can go around a pool that is no longer so clear on the left. After the bridge there was a muddy pond, so we got out there. Still a nice tour.

Sehr niedriger Wasserstand, zwischendrin trocken und bis zur Brücke klare Becken. Farbenfroh und abwechslungsreiche Schlucht.
Den ersten Pool nach dem C50 sind wir links umgangen, da das Wasser nicht klar war. Noch dreckiger war der Tümpel nach der Brücke. Dort sind wir raus.
Very low water level, dry in between and clear pools up to the bridge. Colorful and varied canyon.
We bypassed the first pool after the C50 on the left as the water was not clear. The pool after the bridge was even dirtier. That's where we got out.

Un des rares jours de soleil à Ribeiro Frio. Une descente magnifique. Peu d'eau, des bassins cristallins, de la roche qui accroche. Fortement recommandé, malheureusement le Frio sera à sec dans une ou deux semaines.

Ribeiro Frio est de nouveau en condition. La partie touristique est tout à fait praticable, seuls les amarages de la main courante du R12 sont encore en très mauvais état, l'un est manquant, le second est desserré. Le rocher a une bonne adhérence du début jusqu'au R12. La grande cascade est à la limite mais faisable. Cette partie est plus glissante que la reste. La température de l'eau est à la limite de la nécessité de porter des gants.
