Der Maurerbach ist ein Bach, der nur ab Ende Oktober Anfang November begangen werden kann. Er wird durch einen Gletscher gespeist und führt im Sommer zu viel Wasser, um begehbar zu sein. Erst im Oktober/November, wenn die Temperatur in der Nacht auf 2000m unter 0° liegt wird der Maurerbach begehbar. Bei unserer Begehung war das Wasser ok, wobei man schon Wassergefahren kennen sollte (Syphon, Prallwände). Zur Abschätzung findet man das Foto im Anhang, dass direkt beim Parkplatz, bei dem markanten Stein im Bach aufgenommen wurde. Eine gute Neoprenausrüstung ist beim Maurerbach notwendig, da er sehr aquatisch ist und man sehr oft mit dem Wasser in Kontakt kommt. Ein wunderschöner, aquatischer Gletschercanyon für den Spätherbst, der gut mit dem Dorferbach ein Tal weiter an einem Wochenende kombiniert werden kann. Im Vergleich zum Dorferbach ist man beim Maurerbach durchgehend in einer Klamm unterwegs. Der Maurerbach besticht durch sein dunkles Gestein mit glasklaren, tiefblauen Gumpen und durch seine Südausrichtung hat man wunderbare Lichtspiele in der Klamm. Ein Must-Have für winterfeste Canyonouten, die sich mit Wassergefahren auskennen.

The Maurerbach is a stream that can only be walked on from the exit of October to the beginning of November. It is fed by a glacier and carries too much water in summer to be passable. Only in October/November, when the temperature is below 0° at night at 2000m, the Maurerbach becomes passable. During our walk the water was ok, but you should know about water hazards (syphon, baffles). For estimation you can find the photo attached, which was taken directly at the parking lot, at the prominent stone in the stream. A good neoprene equipment is necessary for the Maurerbach, because it is very aquatic and one comes very often in contact with the water. A beautiful, aquatic glacier canyon for late autumn, which can be well combined with the Dorferbach one valley further on a weekend. Compared to the Dorferbach, the Maurerbach is a gorge throughout. The Maurerbach impresses with its dark rock with crystal clear, deep blue pools and due to its southern orientation you have wonderful light shows in the gorge. A must-have for winter-proof canyon routes that are familiar with water hazards.

Nach Lienz in Osttirol fahren und dann weiter ca. 26km auf der B108 nach Matrei. Bei Matrei in das Virgental abbiegen und ca. 17km nach Hinterbichl fahren. Man fährt durch Hinterbichl durch und über die Brücke des Dorferbachs (rechts sieht man eine alte Mühle). Man bleibt auf der Straße für ca. 1,6km bis man ca. 100m vor der Brücke über den Maurerbach rechts abbiegt und beim großen asphaltierten Parkplatz or. li. vom Mauerbach parkt.

Drive to Lienz in Osttirol and then continue approx. 26km on the B108 to Matrei. At Matrei turn into the Virgental and drive about 17km to Hinterbichl. You drive through Hinterbichl and over the bridge of the Dorferbach (on the right you can see an old mill). Stay on the road for about 1.6km until you turn right about 100m before the bridge over the Maurerbach and park at the large asphalt parking lot or. left of the Mauerbach.

Vom Parkplatz geht man über die Brücke des Maurerbachs zum Kletterpark Großvenediger. Man geht durch den Kletterpark und bleibt auf der Schotterstraße für ca. 30-40 min bis die Straße endet. Anmerkung: Mit geländegängigen Fahrzeugen könnte man diese 30 min abkürzen, jedoch ist das Befahren der Schotterstraße eigentlich untersagt. Am Ende der Schotterstraße ist eine Umkehre, die auch als möglicher Parkplatz dienen kann. Von dieser Ausweiche geht man kurz rechts den Berg rauf, bis man zu dem klar ersichtlichen Wanderweg kommt. Diesem Wanderweg folgt man für ca. 1,5h bergauf. Man geht noch an kleinen Holzhütten vorbei, ehe man auf ca. 2060Hm in Richtung Maurerbach geht. Der Einstieg ist gut ersichtlich, weil eine Quelle von or. rechts in den Maurerbach bei einem Betonhäuschen führt. Ca 50m oberhalb befindet sich der Einstieg bei einem kleinen Felssturz bei dem ein alter Klettersteig noch ersichtlich (Kabel und Tritte).

From the parking lot you walk over the bridge of the Maurerbach to the climbing park Großvenediger. Go through the climbing park and stay on the gravel road for about 30-40 min until the road ends. Note: With off-road vehicles you could shorten this 30 min, however, driving on the gravel road is actually prohibited. At the exit of the gravel road is a turnaround, which can also serve as a possible parking lot. From this turnout, turn right up the hill until you reach the clearly visible hiking trail. Follow this trail uphill for about 1.5 hours. You pass some small wooden huts before you start walking towards the Maurerbach at an altitude of about 2060m. The entry is well visible, because a spring leads from or. right into the Maurerbach at a concrete cottage. About 50m above is the entry at a small rockfall where an old via ferrata still visible (cables and steps).

Bei dem Felssturz befindet sich ein alte Baustahlöse des ehemaligen Klettersteiges. Diese Öse kann man verwenden um gesichert zum Felssturz zu gelangen. Man sieht die alten Drahtseile des Klettersteiges und kann hier durch den Felssturz abseilen, indem man die alten Tritte des Klettersteigs als Abseilpunkt verwendet. Hat man sich in den Felssturz abgeseilt verwendet man den 2. Tritt!!! von unten des ehem. Klettersteiges, da der letzte Tritt bereits locker ist. Hier hat man zum ersten Mal Kontakt mit dem kalten Wasser. Über ein kleines Becken seilt man sich schlussendlich in den ersten größeren Gumpen ab. Nun kommt man zu der Quelle mit Betonhäuschen, die man zuvor gesehen hat. Man klettert or. li. aus dem Gumpen raus und steht vor dem ersten Sprung. Es folgt der nächste höhere Abseiler, der nach ca. 5m auch gesprungen werden kann, sollte der Absprung nicht wie bei unserer Begehung vereist sein. Die nächste Stelle ist die gefährlichste der Schlucht! Man klettert zuerst or. li. ab ehe man ca 2m über dem Pool steht. Links von einem ist eine kleine Höhle ausgeschwemmt und rechts führt ein kleiner Wasserablauf weiter. Hier muss man zum Wasserablauf hinspringen, da sich in der Höhle ein Syphon befindet. Wenn man in Richtung Ablauf hinspringt, stellt der Syphon keine Gefahr dar. Nach einer kleinen Gehstrecke durch teilweise tiefere Gumpen kommt man zu einem kleinen Abseiler (C3 re), der in einen Gumpen mit Prallwand führt. Danach kommt der wohl schönste Teil der Schlucht. Man seilt sich durch eine enge Stelle in ein Art Höhle mit sensationell schönen Auswaschungen und einen tiefen Gumpen mit Strömung. Ein kleiner Sprung (S2) führt aus diesem absolut traumhaften Teil und es folgt eine längere Geh- und Abkletterpassage, teilweise durch engere Korridore. Nach der Geh- und Abkletterpassage folgen 2 kleinere Abseiler, ehe man vor einem Abseiler (C12re) steht, der auch gesprungen werden kann (S9), wenn der Absprung nicht vereist ist. Im Gumpen befindet sich eine Prallwand, die man jedoch mit einigen kräftigen Schwimmbewegungen und Abstoßen von der Wand leicht entkommt. Nun folgt eine weitere schöne Stelle. Man seilt sich in eine weitere höhlenartige Enge stelle mit durchaus turbulenten Gumpen, es folgt eine kleine Schwimmstrecke unter einem großen Klemmblock (links!) vorbei, ehe man aus dem dunklen Bereich wieder ans Licht kommt. Es folgt ein Sprung (S3) und ein weiterer Sprung (S2). ACHTUNG! Bei diesem Gumpen befindet sich direkt in der Mitte ein Stein! Hier muss man or. rechts eng zur Wand hinspringen, damit man nicht auf dem Stein landet. Es folgen ein paar Abkletterpassagen, sowie 2 trockene Abseiler. Den R15li sollte man or li am Felsband abseilen, weil bei unserer Begehung im Gumpen (or. re.) eine größere Verblockung gelegen ist, die bei dem Wasserstand im Maurerbach durchaus herausfordernd werden kann. Nachdem man unter einem großen Klemmblock durchgegangen ist folgt der letzte Abseiler C10re. Hier war die eigentliche Idee, dass man or. re. am Felsband zu einem weiteren Bohrhaken kommt, um nicht direkt im Wasser abseilen zu müssen. Leider war bei unserer Begehung das Felsband vereist und so mussten wir direkt durchs Wasser abseilen. Hier ist man zwingend in der Strömung in dem durchaus stark wasserführenden Maurerbach. Nach einer weiteren Engstelle (Biegung nach rechts) kann man or. li. aussteigen. Man klettert zuerst durch die Büsche, geht dem Hang entlang, ehe man zu einem Weg kommt, der nach ca. 2 min zu dem Wanderweg führt, den man beim Aufstieg gegangen ist.

At the rockfall there is an old steel eyelet of the former via ferrata. This eyelet can be used to reach the rockslide secured. You can see the old wire ropes of the via ferrata and you can rappel through the rock fall by using the old steps of the via ferrata as anchor. Once you have rappelled into the rockslide, use the 2nd step!!! from the bottom of the former via ferrata, as the last step is already loose. Here you have contact with the cold water for the first time. Over a small pool you finally rappel into the first larger pool. Now you come to the spring with concrete huts that you saw before. You climb out of the pool ortographic left and are in front of the first jump. The next higher rappel follows, which can also be jumped after about 5m, if the rappel is not icy, as it was during our ascent. The next place is the most dangerous of the canyons! First you climb down ortographic left before you stand about 2m above the pool. To the left of you a small cave is washed out and to the right a small water drain leads further. Here you have to jump to the water drain, because there is a syphon in the cave. If you jump towards the drain, the syphon is not a danger. After a short walking passages through partly deeper pools you come to a small rappel (C3 re), which leads into a pool with a baffle wall. After that comes probably the most beautiful part of the canyon. You rappel through a narrow passage into a kind of cave with sensationally beautiful washouts and a deep pool with current. A small jump (S2) leads out of this absolutely gorgeous part and a longer walk and downclimb follows, partly through narrower corridors. After the walking and downclimbing passage, 2 smaller rappels follow before one stands in front of a rappel (C12re), which can also be jumped (S9), if the rappel is not icy. In the pool there is a baffle wall, but you can easily escape it with some strong swimming and pushing off the wall. Now follows another beautiful spot. One ropes into another cave-like narrow place with quite turbulent pools, there follows a small swimming section under a large clamping block (left!) past, before one comes out of the dark area back into the light. A jump (S3) and another jump (S2) follow. ATTENTION: At this pool there is a stone directly in the middle! Here you have to jump or. right closely to the wall, so that you do not land on the stone. A few downclimbs follow, as well as 2 dry rappels. The R15li should be rappelled or left on the rocky ledge, because during our ascent in the pool (or. right) is a larger blocking, which can be quite challenging at the water level in the Maurerbach. After passing under a large clamping block, the last rappel C10re follows. Here the actual idea was that one comes or. right on the rock band to another piton, so as not to have to rappel directly in the water. Unfortunately, during our ascent the ledge was icy and so we had to rappel directly through the water. Here you are forced in the current in the quite strongly water-bearing Maurerbach. After another narrow passage (bend to the right) one can exit or. left. First you climb through the bushes, walk along the slope, before you come to a path, which leads after about 2 min to the hiking trail, which you walked during the ascent.

Man geht den gleichen Weg wieder retour zum Parkplatz. Hat man unerlaubterweise ein geländegängiges Fahrzeug benutzt und das bei der Ausweiche geparkt, verkürzt sich der Rückweg auf 45 min.

You go back the same way to the parking lot. If you have used an off-road vehicle without permission and parked it at the turnout, the way back is shortened to 45 min.
